Javanese Course / Bahasa Jawa
PROFICIENCY LEVELS
The Javanese language, spoken predominantly on the island of Java in Indonesia, has three distinct speech levels: Ngoko, Madya, and Krama. These levels reflect varying degrees of formality and respect. Ngoko is used for casual, everyday conversation among friends and family, Madya serves as a middle-ground, and Krama is employed in formal or polite contexts, especially when speaking to elders or strangers. This intricate system of speech levels illustrates the deep cultural importance of respect and social hierarchy in Javanese society.
We provide three levels for Javanese Course :
- Beginner Level:
At the beginner level, students focus on acquiring foundational skills in Javanese language and culture, aiming to develop basic communicative abilities for everyday situations. They learn essential vocabulary related to greetings, family, food, and daily activities, along with fundamental grammar structures and pronunciation practice. By the end of this level, students should be able to engage in simple conversations, introduce themselves, ask basic questions, and understand straightforward spoken and written texts.
- Intermediate Level:
At the intermediate level, learners expand their vocabulary to include more nuanced subjects like travel, and social interactions, while advancing in grammar to cover sentence structures with Javanese affixes and conditional forms. They focus on enhancing fluency in speaking and listening comprehension, enabling participation in longer conversations, discussing personal experiences, and expressing opinions. Reading and writing skills progress to understanding simple texts and composing coherent paragraphs.
- Advanced Level:
The advanced level aims for good proficiency in both spoken and written Javanese, with vocabulary expansion, complex grammar, idiomatic expressions, and stylistic nuances enhancing their ability to engage in regular conversations with native Javanese speakers. By the end of the course, students are expected to achieve advanced listening comprehension for native-level conversations and to comprehend essays and journalistic writing in Javanese.
